My Homeless Friend!!!

The first time I saw him he sat still like a mendicant in dusty black clothes with his back pasted against a red brick wall. It was late autumn and the receding sun lit up his dark black skin and gorgeous features. His eyes were bright and looked like two lamps set sailing in dark waters. He did not have his baseball cap out begging for small change nor did he call out to people walking by, he was not needy even if he was in need and maybe it was this quality in him that drew me. I reached out for a dollar bill and handed it out which he accepted slowly and said, "God bless you!”

Ever since that unexpected introduction it has been a tradition of mine to remember to hand my change to him and receive his blessing.

For the longest time he didn't seem to notice, he didn't seem to recall, he didn't seem to recognize and I simply assumed that he could not. There were those days that his desperation had reached its peaks, when he yelled out like an animal in pain, he begged like a soul barred of humiliation, he cried out like a new born knowing no shame and even on those rare days he blessed whole heartedly those that emptied their tights palms and fed him with what ever it was that he needed most.

On one evening after a long and tiring day, I rushed to the train station to get back home. My mind was too preoccupied with this particularly difficult instructor whose class I had signed up for and our silent hostility towards each other. All of my hard, devoted and undying effort in her class had been undermined once again and my heart was heavy while my mind danced with doubts of my capabilities. As usual I identified him, my homeless friend, at a distance. I pulled out my pocket change and handed it to him. He was loud when he said, "That's my baby girl, God bless you my baby!” Then I heard him chant, "That's my baby girl", until I did not disappear onto a different street! My mood changed instantly, I forgot all about the difficult instructor and now I had a new bond with another unknown human being.

Our relationship matured and this acknowledgement given and received was constant, though on days it was not clear who the giver was and who the receiver.

It was a particularly cold winter afternoon. I was worked to the bone and my depression had set in quiet thickly. My footsteps were heavy and my enthusiasm was dwindling as well. Close to exhaustion I stepped out of the train, dragging my feet and walked slowly towards school. The class with the sour instructor made me exhausted, I had no more psychic energy to dole out to our unspoken battle and I was war weary. The weather was brutal and I could not fathom how he withstood it, sitting out there in the open and protected only by the kindness of strangers. He sat bundled in old clothes and comforters his baseball cap laid out before him, he was cold and in visible discomfort. The golden one Dollar coin that I tossed into his cap, sunk low and the pennies that were already in there quickly covered it. "What? Did you give me a penny, go fuck yourself!" he yelled out.

I am sure there are many who have wanted to tell me that but hearing it out aloud, said to my face, on the street, and the sheer irony of it made me of all things buckle down with laughter. My depression peeled away instantly and I laughed the laughter of a lunatic all the way to school. I had somehow stopped taking myself seriously and on that fateful day, the nasty instructor was just another human with bad taste. She lost her power over me and I regained my sense of humor.

After a long summer, I saw him back in his corner for the first time today. He looked crisp in his new haircut. Today he said, "thank you beautiful! God bless you!" and put a smile on my face. I don't even know his name!!! Over the years my judgment has dropped off of me, I have set down that heavy sack and now I walk more leisurely!

I once was alone in the city, now I have many friends. Some of them know that hearing a blessing reassures my heart and they bless me everyday

Sister Geraldine!!!

It was around two in the afternoon. She interrupted the ongoing class like she always did. Walking in with a pile of report cards stacked tightly against her chest, she held them as one would hold onto a rebellious child.

Her face was the usual color of red and tan, her spectacles thick and squared sat precariously on her sweaty face. Her head was covered with a scarf except for a few strands of coarse, black, unruly curls that peeked out; perhaps she enjoyed not being perceived as a bald nun! Her skirt did not go all the way down, its white layers seemed to stop short right between her knee and ankle. She wore those skin colored pantyhose and her black sandals carried her tiny, fast feet.

I cannot recall her smiling! Her face was always pinched and angry. And needless to say I was terrified of her!

Well this particular afternoon I was in deep despair, so desperate that I was willing to pray to any God for help, hers, mine, theirs, I really didn't care! Like a prisoner ready to be executed, my heart hoped for reprieve! I hoped she would be kind, I hoped she would notice that this was my very first time, I hoped she would not be loud in her callous announcements, I hoped the other girls would not smirk, I hoped my parents would not mind.  After all it was a 'moral science' test and I never really studied for it!!!

As was the ritual, we all stood as she walked in and wished her a very good afternoon! If the day was ridiculously hot and the stench of the girls toilet situated right next to our fifth grade classroom bothered us, we pretended it was okay. There had been no running water in there and who could be blamed. Due to my medium height I sat in the third or fourth row on the far right, away from the classroom door and close to the windows. I used to sit there a lot!! I recall letting my mind wander amongst the trees, the thick foliage, the moss, the mushrooms and the occasional rabbit right outside the window! My mind wandered a whole lot and quiet often!

She stood right in the center of the classroom to announce each of our ranking. She waited for absolute silence, which was handed to her without any resistance. We were all ranked, all forty-five of us, each according to our academic performance. Everyone who had passed in all the subjects tested was given a ranking. At times I procured a ranking as far down as thirty-fifth or forty-first! But my real life was the life outside of school and there I was content!!

We clapped our hands for the first three rank holders, as she curled her lips slightly letting out that rare smile in appreciation of their hard work. After which, there was no clapping, she called out our names and our ranking for all of the class to know. Those who had failed 'a' subject came under the category of ‘failed’, these kids would not get a ranking, they were special. They were to be pushed down deep into the underworld of hellish humiliation on account of their laziness and stupidity there they would have no friends and no consolation. After all punishment was atonement for your sins!! And I had sinned!!! I had managed to fail in 'moral science'!!!

I wish I could tell you that this failure made me contemplate the nature of my morals and my unwillingness to abide by some unseen yet fully recommended code for all of mankind! But I was most interested in just lasting my ordeal with as much grace as possible and to hold back those tears if they should push though the firm barriers of my strong mind. I had learnt at that young age that I had to remain strong and not to look anyone in the eye when I was in pain. I preferred to nurse my wounds in private and then again there was this other and significant challenge of having to have this report card signed by a parent. So like a starving man rationing his supplies, I too had decided to ration my suffering cause I was to suffer in two separate places for the very same crime.

She paused after all the ranks were announced, as if she wanted to gather everyone's attention once again for the grand finale – the essential slaughter! Her favorite part!! Where she would decide which hell and what punishment would purify the young and deviant souls of those of us who had failed. 'Vandana', she called, I stood and walked quickly towards her, I wanted this to be over with. Her face twisted in fury and I forgot the tears and focused on the bladder that was ready to come loose!!! ' What a pity?? Failing in moral science!!!’ she announced before the entire class. 'I am sorry! I managed to whisper and rushed back to my seat. My body felt hot, and sweat trickled down my back, I had to sit down and wait for the blood to flow out from my face and for my heart to stop pounding!! I just stared at my desk for as long as I needed to gain composure. I had survived!

That year was rough! I had no friends and my sisters were not in the same school anymore! I walked back home like I usually did, rehearsing what I would tell my mother all along the way. Catching her in a good mood was important, how I worded my plea was important, the promises I would make for future betterment of my sinned soul was important. All of this would determine her management of the expectations of my father who would in turn sign the report card.

My mother was burdened as usual with too much care! She was irritated and bothered when I approached her with my confession. She was a good mother, who had protected us often from the many disgraceful things that we were tempted to participate in. Due to her inability to speak the English language, I considered her vulnerable and was terribly protective of her as well. Beyond doubt I knew she loved me but this particular incident involved the extension of her power in the household, as my father was the one who would place his signature upon this shameful card and I could not imagine him wanting to partake in my shame. Anyway it had to be done and so I told her with my eyes as wide as saucers, that I had failed and that I had failed in 'moral science'. I expected the worst!! It was an abnormal situation and in hindsight her abnormal reaction was natural!!! 'What about math and science?” she asked. I had done well in those so I replied confidently. 'Alright, she said, never mind moral science!’ With this casual remark she went on with whatever it was that she was busy doing.  It had ended even before it started and my heart filled up with love for this easy going and understanding soul whom I called mother. She must have spun a good tale as my report card was signed and I took it back to school the next day.

But sister Geraldine was right!! Even today my morals are murky and subject to constant change. I have lied to keep my children from school, I stole a magazine from the dentist's office, I take great risks to appease my own heart, I love wine and several R-rated movies and I tend to indulge in life and enjoy it to the fullest!

So this is what I have to say to her!

"Dear Sister Geraldine, never mind those morals, please learn to love, love at any cost and fully at least once in your life, please do not forgo the joys of this life in exchange for rewards in the other and find that heaven right within you. I have survived despite failing! In fact I am thriving, have ample love in my life and smile often. You see, you knew the rules, the codes and the right morals but I have God' s hand upon me!”

"What a pity?? Wasting your life!!!"

Protein vs. Cheerios!!

Popeye, graduated from 'Obedience School' and now lives in a beautiful home in the suburbs with four servants! Only problem is that he cannot remember what he learnt at school.

People who know me know of my immense fear of dogs! I have feared them for as long as I can remember, crossing the street as I saw one walking along, refusing to visit families that housed dogs, jumping on tables, chairs, climbing curtains to avoid being sniffed at and more! But when my children pleaded me for a puppy, out of the graciousness of my gentle heart and my magnanimous feelings of love for them I caved!!!

We now have Popeye, a five month old, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who behaved like a common thug this morning!!!

The day is beautiful! The sun is out!!! I woke up with a force of energy, joking, laughing and being nutty this morning I delighted my children to no end! When they each left for school, baby Popeye looked disappointed! I decided to cheer him - we left for the park, not far away, with a small lake and the first 20 minutes were splendid! We each enjoyed the sights and smells and the rigorous exercise of walking on a path and stopping every time he wanted to take his surroundings in. He stared at the ducks for so.. long and observed the ripples in the water like a poet! His little soul touched mine and I cherished having him!

Its been a huge adjustment for me! Never say never! I told myself I would never have a puppy and now I do! I told myself I could never love dogs and now I love a few! Bathing the little guy, walking him, scooping his poop, training him, socializing so he will be socialized these are just a few things I have done for this adopted canine, who I call son!

But he resists! He resists my humaneness and wants me to love him for what he is - a dog who will always remain a dog! After I bathe him in a lavender shampoo, he rolls on the grass as if to eliminate the sweet scent from his coat, he licks me incessantly, he loves my children more than he loves me and worst of all he loathes my diet!!

Cheerios and carrots, that's what I use to train him and he's been quiet good with that. Sitting on command and leaving chewable slippers and furniture when asked to, dropping the ball while playing fetch and walking on a leash more or less, he's been a pleasant experience thus far! Today he was evil!!!

As we drove to the park, I looked at his large, extra large, beautiful brown eyes, peering into mine and imagined I saw his soul! I felt anger towards all the humans who eat things with eyes on them, I felt the remorse would be unimaginable if I ever did so!! Did I forget to mention that this morning he was fed an assortment of meat, in the form of dry biscuits, called kibble, that I pretend is okay cause it has no eyes and it does not bleed!!!

So as baby Popeye, sniffed the green grass in the park, I allowed him a longer leash in the event he felt the need to relieve himself, but no!!! He found a dead rat and picked it 'into' his mouth, hook, line and sinker, head, tail and sloppy body all alike!!! "Drop it", I commanded, to no avail, "Leave it", to no avail, in desperation I offered a handful of cheerios, which he ignored, consuming his own treat with haste now that he knew of my panic!!! He smacked his lips, as I picked the cheerios not wanting to leave trash on public property cause I'm real conscientious of things like that and all.

After that he ran, he ran like the wind, like a rebellious teenager who had got his way and once back in the car he put his head down and slept, snoring a bit, just to remind me of my annoyance and pure disgust! At the traffic light, I was overcome with an urge for revenge, revenge for all the hardships that this little idiotic ball of black fur with shining eyes has put me through these past two months so I invoked my right to annoy! Every time he closed his eyes, I tapped his head so he couldn't sleep! Pretty soon I lost this battle as well! He ignored my tapping and just slept!!!

Once back home, I lectured him about his ingratitude, his disrespect of his adopted mother's vegetarian lifestyle, his grossness and his animal like habits including licking his private parts brazenly before me whenever he pleases and he lowered his head! I assumed shame and almost smiled! Popeye found a cheerio under the table and went for it!!!

Case closed!! I need space, I need time and I know I'll love him again!!!
